Obituary for June Layton (Moncrief)

Wilbur Louise “June” Layton, 78, of Waco passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2017. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 14 at 10 am at Western Heights Baptist Church, 6301 Bosque Blvd., Waco. A graveside Celebration of Life will be held Saturday afternoon at 1 pm at Shanks Cemetery between Kirvin and Teague, Texas. Visitation with the family will be Friday, October 13 from 5 to 7 pm at OakCrest Funeral Home.

June was born February 13, 1939 in Teague, Texas to Arnold and Mattie Moncrief. She graduated from Teague High School in 1957. June and a young boy, Paul Layton became childhood friends. Their friendship grew into love and they were married December 23, 1961 in Teague. They began their married life stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, while Paul served in the US Army. In 1967, they relocated to the Waco area. June was a devoted wife, mother and Christian. She was a member of Western Heights Baptist Church and was involved in many church activities, such as Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, the Nursing Home Ministry, and Women on Missions. She also played the organ and piano during services. She believed in the power of prayer – there was never a Prayer Warrior like June Layton. She was also an avid reader, seamstress and crafter. She will be deeply missed by many who love her.

June was welcomed in to heaven by her parents, Arnold and Mattie Moncrief, and her brother, Aldon Moncrief.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 56 years, Paul Layton of Waco; daughter, Paula Barnes and husband, Gaylen of Lorena; son, David Layton of Denton; grandsons, Brett Wiggins and Reid Layton of Denton; and granddaughter, Sara Eades of West.

Serving as pallbearers are her nephews, Brad Layton, Kent Layton, Mark Layton, and Andy Moncrief and her cousins, Jerry Beasley and Joe Chappell. Honorary pallbearers are nephews, Randy Layton, Gregg Layton and in spirit, John Layton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Western Heights Baptist Church Library, American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
